چکیده

Calcium balance is essential for a multitude of physiological processes, ranging from cell signaling to maintenance of bone health. Adequate intestinal absorption of calcium is a major factor for maintaining systemic calcium homeostasis. Recent observations indicate that a reduction of gastric acidity may impair effective calcium uptake through the intestine. This article reviews the physiology of gastric acid secretion, intestinal calcium absorption, and their respective neuroendocrine regulation and explores the physiological basis of a potential link between these individual systems.

DIETARY POLYDEXTROSE INCREASES CALCIUM ABSORPTION IN NORMAL RATS Polidextrose aumenta a absorção de cálcio em ratos

Extensive gastric surgery is known to cause bone disorders (osteomalacia/osteoporosis)7,9 possibly related to an impaired capacity for the absorption of dietary calcium1,5. The absence of gastric acid after gastric resection may impair bioavailability of insoluble dietary calcium because gastric acid is the most important factor for solubilization of otherwise insoluble calcium salts5. The stom...

detected in ten of the fourteen patients, and BAO and MAO were significantly higher than in controls and comparable with acid output in patients with duodenal ulcer (table). These results suggest that increased gastric acid output could be a feature of absorptive hypercalciuria. If ionisation of dietary calcium is a prerequisite for calcium absorption, gastric acid hypersecretion might help to ...

Helicobacter Pylori and Bone Health in Children

Helicobacter pylori (HP) is a gram-negative pathogen, widespread throughout the world and has infected more than 50% of the global population. Developing countries, most people contract in early childhood. HP may be the cause of stomach cancer, gastritis and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum. Gastric acid secretion is reduced and the natural stomach functions are affected. Several studies have...

Hypochlorhydria‐induced calcium malabsorption does not affect fracture healing but increases post‐traumatic bone loss in the intact skeleton

Efficient calcium absorption is essential for skeletal health. Patients with impaired gastric acidification display low bone mass and increased fracture risk because calcium absorption is dependent on gastric pH. We investigated fracture healing and post-traumatic bone turnover in mice deficient in Cckbr, encoding a gastrin receptor that affects acid secretion by parietal cells. Cckbr-/- mice d...

Dietary protein and skeletal health: a review of recent human research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Both dietary calcium and vitamin D are undoubtedly beneficial to skeletal health. In contrast, despite intense investigation, the impact of dietary protein on calcium metabolism and bone balance remains controversial. A widely held view is that high intakes of animal protein result in increased bone resorption, reduced bone mineral density, and increased fractures because of i...
